The Revelstoke Ski Club’s K1 team (11-12 years old) had a very successful home race last weekend on the Feller Buncher run at RMR. Thanks to a lot of hard work from both local and out of town volunteers, the Giant Slalom events went smoothly – two one-run races on Saturday and one two-run race on Sunday.

The long-standing friendly rivalry between Max Scharf and Mitch Smith continued that weekend, with Max winning a race on Saturday and Mitch winning on Sunday. Both from Salmon Arm and members of the Revelstoke Ski Club, Mitch and Max have been neck-and-neck for the last few seasons.

Scharf won the first race on Saturday while Smith fell and didn’t finish. In the second race, Max came second to Vernon’s Matt Kreutz – out by only 11 hundredths of a second – while Mitch placed fourth. In Sunday’s race Smith easily won both runs to take gold, while Max did not finish.

“Today I relaxed more and just tried to have fun,” Mitch said about Sunday’s combined race. “It feels like E2 again,” when he was younger and consistently winning medals on the circuit.

Revelstoke’s Sonia Schwenck also won a medal – the bronze in Saturday’s first race. “It feels great,” Schwenck beamed about her first medal as a K1 racer. “It’s my home hill! And I’ve been working really hard in training.”

On Saturday Callum Hicks won the most improved award on both runs, and Sara-Jo Howatt took that prize on the second run. The medal is given to the athlete who moves up the most places from their start to finish position. Howatt moved into a ninth and tenth place finish, while Hicks, racing with a broken thumb, took a tenth and an eleventh, and a ninth in Sunday’s race.

Also racing in a cast due to a broken thumb, Anne-Marie Duchesne finished in eighth on Sunday and 14th on Saturday. Thea Peasgood took 19th spot on Sunday and tied for 22nd on Saturday. Bryce Molder also had a 19th place finish, and Donovan Miskiman a 21st.

The FIS team competed in Downhill and Super Giant Slalom races last week at Apex resort. Persevering through some foggy conditions, the team came home with very strong results. On the first downhill race day, the men got started but only got through 47 racers before the fog became too thick and the race had to stop there.

The second day went much more smoothly under sunny skies: in two women’s races Daniella Aberger took two tenth places, Erika Park a 12th and a 14th, and Stephanie Landry a 29th and a 36th. In the men’s race that day Eric Schwenck placed 53rd, Richie Smith 59th and Brady Roy 73rd.

Again, due to fog, only one Super G race took place. Aberger finished seventh, but was the third Canadian overall behind a Chilean and three Americans. Park placed 21st and Landry 32nd. Schwenck and Roy finished 48th and 63rd respectively, while their teammate Richie Smith was in Penticton writing an exam.

“I had some good results in the series; I lowered my points and it was super fun,” Eric Schwenck said. “I learned quite a bit and it helped me for all the other events too, so it’s going to help my racing for the rest of the season.”

The K2 team is currently in Panorama for their Provincial Championships and the FIS team will be in Norquay this weekend for GMC Cup races. This Sunday you can watch all the Revelstoke Ski Club’s young Nancy Greene league skiers as they race against other clubs on the Feller Buncher run.
