The race season has ended for the Revelstoke Ski Club – now the athletes will return to going to school every day and start their spring and summer sports. The season ended with some exciting events and excellent results.

The K1 team came out on top of the Okanagan zone after the zone finals race in Big White. They beat the team from the host club, as well as teams from Silver Star, Apex and Sun Peaks over the course of the season to take the overall prize.

At the zone finals the team had some strong results to clinch the title. Mitch Smith made the podium with a third place in the slalom, Sonia Schwenck and Callum Hicks both finished sixth, Sara-Jo Howatt was eighth, Bryce Molder 14th, Max Scharf 16th, Anne-Marie Duchesne 18th and Thea Peasgood 25th.

The K2s and Js also raced well at the event: Lachlan Hicks took the gold in slalom, Alex Duchesne was sixth, Robert Bernava seventh, Chris Wadey and Emily Unterberger eighth, Davis Roy ninth and Stephanie Landry tenth. On the challenging course many skiers did not finish, including Revelstoke’s Hannah Yauck, Alix Petit, Adrian Bernava, Landon Yauck, Cole Smith and Peter Behncke.

Four Revelstoke skiers were selected to race at the Whistler Cup, which is an international children’s race. Peter Behncke, Lachlan Hicks, Mitch Smith and Max Scharf raced against young skiers from countries such as Austria, Slovenia and New Zealand last weekend.

Team Canada won the overall title, with Italy in second and Japan in third. Smith had a string of finishes in the 20s – 23rd in the kombi, 24th in the slalom and 27th in the giant slalom. Teammate Scharf was 30th, 37th and 33rd. Behncke came 23rd in the slalom and didn’t finish the super g or giant slalom. Hicks was 27th in the slalom, 46th in the giant slalom and 63rd in the super g.

“It was a good event,” said head coach Ned Lazarevic. “It’s a great experience for the kids to see the competition from around the world.”

The FIS team also recently concluded their race season: the girls raced at Nakiska and the boys at a very icy Panorama. Top results included a 19th place for Alix Petit, 27th for Erika Park and 40th for Stephanie Landry. On the boys’ side Richie Smith placed 60th, Eric Schwenck 61st and Brady Roy 64th.

The team will now take a few weeks to recover from a very busy season then will start summer dryland training. Congratulations to all racers on a great season!
