The Nancy Greene Zone Finals were great fun for all who participated this weekend at RMR. Young skiers came from as far away as Penticton, Kamloops and Vernon to race in a dual GS on Saturday (five to eight-year-olds) and a Kombi on Sunday (nine to 11-year-olds). The races went off without a hitch and the visiting racers (and parents!) got a taste of how lucky we are to have a world-class mountain in our backyard. The Revelstoke Ski Club would like to thank its sponsors and in particular Revelstoke Mountain Resort for all its support in preparation for and during the races.
Nancy Greene coordinator Karyn Molder was happy (and exhausted) after a successful and very busy weekend. “The races were great,” she said. “All the kids did really well and the visiting parents had a great time too. Our volunteers worked really hard and it paid off.”
The club’s young racers had some outstanding results on their home hill. Five-year-old Nora Sidjak won her division by over eight and a half seconds, while teammates Reed Kelly and Mavic Shaw won silver and bronze, respectively, in the five-year-old boys’ category. Aislinn Buchanan came sixth, Parker Aucoin seventh, Jared Manzo eighth, Andres Sheppard ninth and Kale Jay tenth.
In the six-year-old division Sydney Musseau came fifth, Erika Peasgood sixth and Brynn Harrison 11th for girls, while Teigan Lenzi was seventh boy. The seven-year-old girls’ race was competitive: Jaclyn Elliott came 10th, Automne Beauce 12th, Cassidy Legebokow 13th, Morgan Tegart 14th, Eva Mosher 15th, Devyn Gale 17th, and Holly Hamilton 20th. Alex Jay finished 8th for seven-year-old boys, while teammate Marcus Swift was 14th, Kai Atkinson 15th, Alex Wroe 18th, Josh Larsen 23rd and McKinley Buchanan 24th.
In the oldest category in Saturday’s dual GS, Revelstoke’s racers shone: Kaleb Prunkle snagged a silver medal in the eight-year-old boys, while John Sidjak was close behind in sixth. Nolan Gale was 14th and Ezra Lebel 16th. Sophia Humphreys was eighth girl, Hannah Vickers tenth, Alexis Larsen 17th and Rebecca Brosch 19th.
Sunday brought sun and excitement for the E2 racers – they had two Kombi races, which is a combination of giant slalom and slalom turns. Jenna Knight sped into sixth place, and Jennifer Weger into 17th for nine-year-old girls. Zach Wroe finished seventh, Colm Molder 11th, Aleks Klassen 12th, Callum Gribbon 24th, Erik Brosch 26th and Riley Wallach 35th. Claudia Cinelli came eighth in the ten-year-old girls’ category, followed close behind by Elizabeth Elliott in ninth, Linnea Allain in 14th, Gisele Atkinson in 15th, Kate Granstrom in 16th, Alexis Welch in 17th and Beth Granstrom in 20th. On the boys’ side Levi Strobl placed 11th and Jonah Prunkle 17th. Lucas Federico was fifth and Olin Mosher eighth for 11-year-old boys.
In other racing action this weekend, the K2 team had some great results at their Provincial Championships in Panorama. Emily Unterberger was consistently strong with a fifth and sixth place in giant slalom and a seventh and fourth in slalom. Sonia Schwenck came 27th and Thyra Erben 49th in slalom, while Shayna Seyl had a 61st in GS. In the boys’ races Mitch Smith had an exciting weekend, winning the second run of the GS to finish eighth overall, and placing fifth on the first run of slalom to place tenth overall. Max Scharf had a sixth in slalom and Donovan Miskiman a 63rd in GS. Lachlan Hicks finished off the weekend with a silver medal in slalom, after a somewhat frustrating series with several falls.
This week the FIS team is off to Nakiska for J1 Westerns and next weekend the K1s will travel to Mount Washington for their provincials. National Championships take place during March Break for qualified FIS and K2 athletes – look for more results in the coming weeks!
