PROVINCIAL CHAMPIONSHIPS SUCCESSFUL FOR THE REVELSTOKE SKI RACERS HELP CANADA WIN WHISTLER CUP TITLE

Posted on Apr. 16th, 2009 by Katie Findlay

Team Canada won North America’s only international children’s ski race last weekend. The Whistler Cup hosted young athletes from Japan, Finland and the United States, to name only a few, and came out on top for the first time since 2007. The U.S. came second and Japan third.

The Revelstoke Ski Club sent four of its athletes to compete: Peter Behncke in the K2 (13-14 years) category, and Emily Unterberger, Mitch Smith, and Lachlan Hicks in the K1 (11-12 years) level. Hicks was chosen to represent Team Canada and produced some outstanding results, helping Canada win the overall title.

In the opening day’s Slalom race Lachlan came out strong – finishing second behind Samuel Senkar of Slovakia and ahead of Chris Doan from Thunder Bay, Ontario. Scoring another medal for Team Canada was Broderick Thompson of Whistler, winning the K2 Super G on his home hill. Revelstoke’s Peter Behncke had a strong 24th place finish, while in the K1 Slalom Emily Unterberger came 45th and Mitch Smith 46th.

In Saturday’s K1 GS race Japan took both gold and silver medals on the men’s side; Hicks finished 15th, Unterberger 44th and Smith 51st. Meanwhile, in the K2 Slalom, two Americans took to the podium on the women’s side, and Whistler’s Thompson won bronze on the men’s. Behncke finished 34th.

On the final and deciding day the K2s raced Giant Slalom and the K1s competed in the Kombi event. Team Canada athletes won both the men’s and women’s Kombi: Roni Remme from the Alpine Ski Club in Ontario took the women’s race by almost a full second, and Chris Doan from Thunder Bay won the men’s. Lachlan Hicks just missed the podium with a fourth place finish behind Doan, Keiya Saito from Japan and Fedor Myagkov from Russia. Emily Unterberger finished 40th and Mitch Smith 48th.

In the K2 event two Finnish and one Japanese athlete stood on the men’s podium, with the top Canadian in sixth – Gabriel Presseault from Quebec. Peter Behncke finished 39th. In the women’s race the top Canadian was Devon Clarke from Ontario, taking fourth behind two Americans and one Czech racer.

Also racing last weekend – and all of last week, for that matter – were the Revelstoke Ski Club’s FIS (15 years and up) athletes. Alex Wadey and Richie Smith (both 15) and Daniella Aberger and Erika Park (both 16) raced four days at Panorama and two at Nakiska to wrap up their season. Competition was stiff with B.C. and Alberta team athletes racing, as well as a few Canadian Development team athletes.

In Panorama, Erika had a 28th place finish in the Giant Slalom and Daniella a 31st; Richie had a 71st and Alex finished 62nd, winning him the sought-after Most Improved award for the day, having moved up 40 places from a 102 start position. In the Slalom, Daniella had an impressive 16th place finish and Richie a 37th.

At Nakiska last weekend, on a very steep and challenging Giant Slalom course, Erika Park posted a 22nd place, Alex Wadey a 44th and Richie Smith a 52nd. Daniella was having a fast second run but fell a few gates from the finish.

All the Revelstoke Ski Club athletes are now taking a bit of time off before they resume dryland training in preparation for next year. Congratulations to all the Revelstoke racers on a great season!
