The Revelstoke Ski Club has been making its fair share of contributions to the Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games. Several parent members volunteered during the alpine skiing events: Lou Bernava was involved in race timing, and Mark Schwenck, Michel Landry and Richard Smith all worked on the course crew. “There were some really long days,” said club president Mark Schwenck. “We started every day at 3 a.m. and one day we worked straight through until after 3 p.m. with only a short break. But the whole event was really exciting.” Annick Blouin also worked as a cook for the Canadian Cross Country Skiing team.

Currently two Revelstoke athletes – Daniella Aberger and Erika Park – are in Whistler after being chosen to forerun the Downhill and Super G events during the Paralympic Games. “We are really excited,” said the 17-year-old Aberger. “We both love speed events and are ready to get into the Olympic spirit,” added Park before they left on Monday.

After the Paralympics they will travel to Nakiska for the Canadian National Championships where they will race against all the Canadian athletes who compete on the World Cup and who raced at the Olympics.

Their FIS team just finished a six-day series in Silver Star for the J1 Western Canadian Championships. Despite sun and warm temperatures, the race track held up well and all athletes on the team scored some good point results. The first two races were Super Gs – Aberger just missed the podium with a fourth place finish, while Park finished 13th and Alix Petit 17th.

In the Giant Slalom Alix Petit began a string of 12th-place finishes, while Park had another 13th. In the Slalom events Eric Schwenck battled big ruts for 44th place, while teammates Richie Smith and Brady Roy took 46th and 51st, respectively. Petit took her third 12th place and Stephanie Landry finished 28th.

Three of the younger Revelstoke athletes were selected to compete in the B.C. Winter Games in Terrace last weekend: Sonia Schwenck, Max Scharf and Mitch Smith. Flying to Terrace and staying in a school gym, they had quite a fun experience with other 11- and 12-year-old racers in the province.

The club’s top results were in the Slalom races: Schwenck scored a 20th, Scharf a 12th and Smith a 14th.

At the time of printing the K2 team had completed two Giant Slalom races during their provincial championships at Big White, with two Slalom races to follow. The first day was quite successful for the Revelstoke athletes: Emily Unterberger finished 12th and Hannah Yauck 66th. Peter Behncke took fifth place while teammate Cole Smith was close behind in seventh. Alex Duchesne placed 20th, Adrian Bernava 46th, Robert Bernava 49th and Landon Yauck 51st. “The kids skied really well today,” said head coach Ned Lazarevic. “They are really improving this season.”

Lachlan Hicks was in sixth place after the first run but did not finish the second. On the second day Hicks finished ninth while Chris Wadey placed 44th and Davis Roy 61st.

The K1 team has their provincial Championships approaching at Red Mountain, while the K2s are gearing up for their Western Canadian Championships here at Revelstoke Mountain Resort from Thursday, March 25 to Sunday, March 28.
