The youngest racers in the Revelstoke Ski Club – the Nancy Greene athletes (aged six to eleven) – recently had a successful Giant Slalom race down the Feller Buncher run at RMR. “The race went really well, it ran very smoothly,” E2 coach Matt Kieller said. “It was a very straightforward GS, there were no injuries, and everyone had fun.”

In the five-year-old girls’ division Revelstoke had three out of the top four: Nora Sidjak second, Erika Peasgood third and Brynn Harrison fourth. Hayden Beauvier was the top five-year-old boy finishing in seventh. For the six-year-olds, Revelstoke’s top girls were Cassidy Legebokow in fourth and Eva Mosher in fifth; the top boy was Marcus Swift in seventh.

Alexis Larson was Revelstoke’s top female among the seven-year-olds in eighth spot while Kaleb Prunkle was top male finishing sixth. In the eight-year-old category Miika Park came tenth and Aleks Klassen sixth. Claudia Cinelli placed fifth among the nine-year-old girls and Levi Strobl fourth for the boys of the same age.

In the ten-year-old group Erin Behncke finished fifth and Olin Mosher seventh, while Alexis Allain was the fourth eleven-year-old girl and Daniel Blackie was the eighth eleven-year-old boy.

“The race was fun,” said Linnea Allain; “It was fast,” added teammate Alexis Welch. “The second run it was really icy,” said Erin Behcnke, “but there were no ruts so it was good.”

“We’re going to do lots of race courses to train for the next races,” Claudia Cinelli noted.

“We stacked up just fine against the other clubs,” coach Kieller said, proud of his young race team. “We gave them a run for their money. Four of our six athletes were top five, [Cinelli, Strobl, Behncke and Mosher] you can’t complain about that.”

Also fresh off the race scene is the K2 team who competed in their first round of the provincial championships at Panorama. Three Super Gs and two Giant Slaloms meant a busy week for the 13- and 14-year-olds from all across British Columbia.

Some highlights from the Super G races include a sixth place for Peter Behncke, 13th for Lachlan Hicks, 16th for Emily Unterberger and 26th for Cole Smith. Alex Duchesne and Chris Wadey both won a most-improved award for moving up the most number of places from their start position: Duchesne had a 22nd place and Wadey a 38th.

In the Giant Slalom the young men did even better: Hicks came in sixth place, Behncke tenth, Duchesne 12th and Smith 14th. Adrian Bernava placed 31st, Chris Wadey 35th and Davis Roy 39th. Emily Unterberger had another strong finish in 17th.

The FIS team recently returned from a very challenging series on the incredibly icy and steep Excalibur run at Mount Norquay. Despite having limited training time in those tough conditions, the team posted some strong results: in Giant Slalom Daniella Aberger had a ninth place, Alix Petit an 11th, Erika Park a 12th, Stephanie Landry a 24th and Brady Roy a 38th.

The men had a very difficult first Slalom course, which only 26 out of 86 racers finished. On the second day Richie Smith finished a solid 39th, while teammates Park, Petit and Landry placed 14th, 27th and 35th, respectively.

Up next for these keen young racers will be the K1 Western Canadian Championships at Mount Norquay next weekend. The Nancy Greeners will be racing in Silver Star the following weekend (February 27 and 28), then some K1s will attend the B.C. Winter Games in Terrace while the K2s have their final round of Provincial Championships at Big White.

Revelstoke Ski Club’s final home race of the season will be the K2 Western Canadian Championships from March 25 to 28. Come check out some of the best young ski racers in the country!
